What’s Missing in Discipleship Today

Please listen to this excellent discussion by Tim Keller, Don Carson, and Stephen Um on What’s Missing in Discipleship Today

Keller talks of the importance of lay a good God-centered foundation. “There was so much background we assumed the culture did for us that discipleship was almost like a finishing school. Now you can’t assume that kids coming up have any of the basic intellectual furniture of even believing in an absolute right and wrong.”

Every person and aspect of the church needs to be involved in discipleship. “I don’t think you can just have a class anymore. You actually have to think of every single thing you do in the church as formative, everything—your worship service, the preaching—it’s going to take everything.”

Matthew 28:19, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations...."

How Porn Is Sidelining Missionaries

"Porn deconditions us for missions. It sidelines us when the nations need us."

Please read How Porn Is Sidelining Missionaries

Titus 2:11-12, "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age."

Here are some quotes.

A newly married couple was "excited to finally have that coveted green light from God to engage in physical intimacy. Three months into marriage, however, the man became disinterested. He couldn’t engage in real intimacy because he’d trained his body to enjoy its fake substitute. His soul and body had been conditioned to prefer the screen over the real thing."

But grace is stronger. Jesus frees the captive soul and expands narrow borders of self-love. Grace instructs us to “deny godlessness and worldly lusts” and reshapes us into a people “eager to do good works” (Titus 2:12, 14).

These unharvested fields need good laborers who may labor long and never see the fruit of their labors.

Porn uniquely undermines patient endurance in gospel endeavors.

It’s hard for someone confessing porn consumption to look you in the eye.

The Son of God became a man so you would find a sympathetic high priest who never turns a cold shoulder to struggling saints who plead for help (Heb. 2:17–184:14–16).

Why do the innocent suffer?

Jesus might have said, "Look at me. I am the ultimate sufferer. I'm going to go to the cross, even though I don't deserve it, even though I've lived a good life, and on the cross, I'm going to experience ultimate derision. I'm going to experience insecurity unto death. I'm going to experience the absolute rejection of my friends. I'm going to experience government-supported violence. I'm going to experience utter hopelessness, the wrath of the universe, the wrath of God. It's all going to come down on me, and I'm going to do it so that someday I can end evil and suffering in this world without destroying you. I'm going to do it to pay for your sins." Tim Keller

1 Peter 2:22-23, "He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly."

Generosity in Scarcity

Listen to Generosity in Scarcity, Tim Keller

Here is some of it.

You should give sacrificially, you should give joyfully, and you should give graciously. You must give and connect that giving to the gospel. I only have what I have because of the unstinting generosity of God, the grace of God, and therefore, I give, radically, this gift to him. If you’ve actually experienced his grace, if you know his love, if you dote on him, if your heart rests in his grace, you will love to give. On the cross, Jesus Christ had everything taken away from him to pay for our sins, to save us. Jesus Christ gave to the point where he lost this life! He lost his life for you. Whenever I see somebody who grasps the grace of God, the costly grace of God in Jesus Christ, it changes your heart so you can give sacrificially and joyfully. See, anything you really, really love, you always have to stop yourself from spending. If you are shaped by the grace of Christ so much that you give radically and joyfully, then your money becomes a form of grace because your money keeps ministries going, which liberates people spiritually. Your money helps the poor and the aliens and the widows, which liberates people physically. Look at what Jesus Christ did by giving himself away. Father, make us a generous congregation. Make us generous people.

Habbakuk 3:17-18, "Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation."

I "honor the emperor" of Japan

Read about Japan's Akihito pushing imperial boundaries to reach out to Asia. I have met him two times in Karuizawa and have deep respect for him and his wife Michiko.

Below are some quotes.

Friends and scholars credit Akihito’s post-war education with laying the foundations for how he forged his role. Influences included (Christian) Quaker tutor Elizabeth Vining and former Keio University head Shinzo Koizumi, who saw many of his students die in the conflict. “Currently, most Japanese people think that the emperor is gentle and kind,” Mototsugu Akashi, a former classmate, told Reuters. “But that is clearly a post-war phenomenon.”

Akihito’s public remarks are carefully vetted to ensure they don’t violate those rules, with delicate discussions determining how forthright he can be. Akihito strained against those limits, say those who know him. “I know that for one or two speeches, he was angry with the Imperial Household Agency and foreign ministry about the words to be used,” said Michael Barrett, who knew Akihito while head of the British Council in Japan during the 1990s. “It was said that they (the imperial couple) were birds in a gilded cage, but he opened the door of that cage,” he added.

In 2015 he and (his wife) Michiko went to Palau’s tiny Peleliu island, site of a fierce battle in 1944. In 2016 they visited the Philippines and this year returned to Okinawa. On the 70th anniversary of Japan’s defeat, Akihito expressed “deep remorse” over the war, a nuanced departure from his annual script. Many liberals and moderate conservatives saw it as a subtle rebuke to Abe, who a day earlier had expressed “utmost grief” for the suffering Japan inflicted but said future generations should not have to keep apologizing.

1 Peter 2:17, "Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor."

Why Indianapolis Megachurch Members Are Joining God in the ‘Swamp’

Some quotes

On the eastern side of Indianapolis, there’s a neighborhood that police used to call the "swamp."

“We wanted to go where people had never heard the name of Jesus,” urban outreach pastor Dale Shaw said. “But we had a blind eye to some of the needs in America.”

“We needed to ‘build bridges of grace that can bear the weight of truth,’ a statement I borrowed from Randy Alcorn,’” lead pastor and TGC Council member Mark Vroegop said.

Holistic investment was needed—everything from job opportunities to education to mothering support to legal aid, all centered around the grace and guidance of the gospel.

The best thing College Park did for Brookside was not try too hard in the early days.

College Park also helped elder David Palmer (Cindy’s husband) start a furniture-making business.

“We think the gospel has the power to light up the whole neighborhood,” Dale Shaw said.
Barb Tait was speaking from experience. “I thought I was going to go help the poor, and the first thing I realized was that I am a broken sinner, and it was my heart that needed to be saved from prejudices and assumptions and selfishness. God exposed me.”

“The contemporary evangelical church is too quick to overlook social issues out of pragmatism, write off social justice as ‘liberal theology,’ and forget that the Bible uses strong words when the poor and disenfranchised are neglected. The ‘though your sins are like scarlet’ issues that will be washed white as snow in Isaiah 1 include failing to seek justice, not correcting oppression, not bringing justice to the fatherless and neglecting to plead the widow’s cause.”

God the Playwright

“If there is a God, we characters in his play have to hope that he put some information about himself in the play. But Christians believe he did more than give us information. He wrote himself into the play as the main character in history, when Jesus was born in a manger and rose from the dead. He is the one with whom we have to do."

"And I will be heard.”

Josephine Butler, called “the most distinguished Englishwoman of the nineteenth century,” was a well-educated and cultured woman with a husband and children.  Her decision to not only enter brothels but to advocate for prostitutes was shocking to society. She viewed her war as a “consecrated rebellion.”

She said, “I will be as harsh as truth and as uncompromising as justice. I am in earnest … and I will be heard.”

YOU ARE ADOPTED!

"YOU ARE ADOPTED! No matter how deeply you may have been wounded or damaged by the lack of love from others in your past, you are now deeply loved. You have been adopted as a child of God and given all the rights and privileges that were previously granted only to the Father's one natural Son, Jesus (1Jn.3:1-2). You don't need to live or feel like a spiritual orphan anymore. God does not see you as merely a pardoned criminal, but as His very own son or daughter! You now have immediate access into the Father's presence, the promise of His provision for your every need, and the privilege of His discipline for your good." Steven L. Childers

1 John 3:1-2, "See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Single mothers in Japan

"Most single mothers in Japan survive on less than half the national median income, the poverty line defined by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
"Their children are, on average, poorer, less educated and have fewer prospects - an underclass in a wealthy and ageing nation that can ill-afford to lose a significant chunk of its future workforce."

God’s Hall of Fame

by Walt Huntley

Your name may not appear down here
In this world’s Hall of Fame.
In fact, you may be so unknown
That no one knows your name;
The headlines here may pass you by,
The neon lights of blue,
But if you love and serve the Lord
Then I have news for you.
This Hall of Fame is only good
As long as time shall be;
But keep in mind, God’s Hall of Fame
Is for eternity
This crowd on earth they soon forget
The heroes of the past.
They cheer like mad until you fail
and that’s how long you last.
But in God’s Hall of Fame
By just believing on His Son
Inscribed you’ll find your name.

I tell you, friend, I wouldn’t trade
My name, however small,
That’s written there beyond the stars
In that Celestial Hall,
For any famous name on earth,
Or glory that it shares;
I’d rather be an unknown here
And have my name up there.

“Good works have always been valued more highly than faith. Of course, it’s true that we should do good works and respect the importance of them. But we should be careful that we don’t elevate good works to such an extent that faith and Christ become secondary. If we esteem them too highly, good works can become the greatest idolatry. This has occurred both inside and outside of Christianity. Some people value good works so much that they overlook faith in Christ. They preach about and praise their own works instead of God’s works.” Martin Luther

Ephesians 2:8-10, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."

Japan and the Samurai

“A truly brave man (ie. such as a samurai) is ever serene; he is never taken by surprise; nothing ruffles the equanimity of his spirit. In the heat of battle he remains cool; in the midst of catastrophes he keeps level his mind. Earthquakes do not shake him, he laughs at storms. We admire him as truly great, who, in the menacing presence of danger or death, retains his self-possession; who, for instance, can compose a poem under impending peril or hum a strain in the face of death. Such indulgence betraying no tremor in the writing or in the voice, is taken as an infallible index of a large nature—of what we call a capacious mind (Yoyū), which, far from being pressed or crowded, has always room for something more.” Inazo Nitobe (a Quaker)Bushido, The Soul Of Japan

The Expulsive Power of a New Affection

Thomas Chalmer's quote from one of his sermons entitled "The Expulsive Power of a New Affection"

"It is seldom that any of our bad habits or flaws disappear by a mere process of natural extinction at least it is very seldom that this is done by the instrumentality of reasoning, or by the force of mental determination, but what cannot be destroyed may be dispossessed, and one taste may be made to give way to another and to lose its power entirely as the reigning affection of the mind. The boy, who ceases at length to be a slave to his appetite does so because a more mature taste has brought it into subordination. The young man may cease to idolize sensual pleasure, but it is because the idol of wealth has gotten the ascendancy, so the love of money can cast out the love of sloth. However, even the love of money can cease to have mastery over the heart if it is drawn into the world of ideology and politics and he is now lorded over by a love of power and moral superiority. But there is not one of these transformations in which the heart is left without an object. The heart's desire for an ultimate object may be conquered, but it's desire to have SOME object is unconquerable. The only way to dispossess the heart of an old affection is through the expulsive power of a new one. It is therefore only when admitted into the number of God's children through faith in Jesus Christ that the spirit of adoption is poured out on us -- it is then that the heart, brought under the mastery of one great, predominate, and supreme affection is delivered from the tyranny of all its former desires and the only way that deliverance is possible. Therefore, it is not enough to hold out to your people the mirror of their own imperfections. It is not enough to come forth with a demonstration of the effanecent character of their enjoyments, or to speak to their consciences of their follies. Rather, make every legitimate method of finding access to their hearts for the love of him who is greater than the world."

Hospitality and church planting

Here are some quotes.

Robert Karris says, “In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is either going to a meal, at a meal, or coming from a meal.”
