Give to God what is God's...

"We will fully and ungrudgingly render to Caesar what is Caesar's. But under no circumstances will we render to Caesar what is God's." Chuck Colson, who is now with His Lord, penned these last lines of the Manhattan Declaration
“Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” Jesus Christ, Matthew 12:17

Pride....

"Pride always means enmity—it is enmity. And not only enmity between man and man, but enmity to God. ... As long as you are proud you cannot know God." C.S. Lewis

However, "a bruised reed he (Jesus Christ) will not break, a smoldering wick he will not snuff out," Isaiah 42:3.

Shinshu University

Every Monday and Tuesday, I teach 6 classes, mainly writing, at Shinshu University. I taught their before for 6 years and now I am back there again. I pray for the students in this way. "The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." Numbers 6:24-26

God is Red

Activist Liao Yiwu has written a most curious book, God is Red, on his positive encounters with Christianity in China. Read articles in Gospel CoalitionHuffington Post

In the interview with Gospel Coalition, Yiwu answers the question, 'What are some of the benefits that the growth of Christianity has brought to China?' He quotes from Reverend Wan Zishing. "In our society today, nobody believes in Communism, and everyone is busy making money. People's minds are entangled and chaotic. They need the words of the gospel now more than at any other time."

So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also.... For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith." Romans 1:15-17

Saying my 'vows'

Sermon by Pastor Matsumura

"You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus." 2  Timothy 2:1-3

Ben Carson

“Everyone in the world worth being nice to. Because God never creates inferior human beings, each person deserves respect and dignity.” Ben Carson

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:26 6 27

“Successful people don't have fewer problems. They have determined that nothing will stop them from going forward.” Ben Carson

Hell

"Some talk of it as an unreasonable thing to fright persons to heaven; but I think it is a reasonable thing to endeavour to fright persons away from hell. They stand upon its brink, and are just ready to fall into it, and are senseless of their danger. Is it not a reasonable thing to fright a person out of a house on fire? The word fright is commonly used for sudden, causeless fear, or groundless surprise; but surely a just fear, for which there is good reason, is not to be spoken against under any such name."
“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where the worms that eat do not die, and the fire is not quenched.' Jesus Christ, Mark 9:42-48

“Can such a woman forgive such a beast of a man?”

Ugandan bishop Festo Kivengere visited a convention gathering of 11,000 in Kenya shortly following the Mau Mau uprising. He watched as a Kikuyu taxi drive from Nairobi, shaking and weeping, confessed that during three years as a terrorist he killed at least sixty people. Nevertheless, he felt God’s love and knew God had forgiven him of all his sins. Still, one incident troubled him. “But there may be a woman in this crowd whose husband I helped to hang in the bedroom, in front of her,” he said. “Can such a woman forgive such a beast of a man?” Indeed, a woman approached him form the crowd, which hushed with anticipation. She reached out and grasped the hand of her husbands killer. “I forgave you that night, when my husband prayed for you,” she said. “You are now my brother.”

Taste and see that the LORD is good!

“There is a difference between having a rational judgment that honey is sweet, and having a sense of its sweetness. A man may have the former, that know not how honey tastes; but can’t have the latter, unless he has an idea of the taste of honey in his mind.”

"Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!" Psalm 34:8

Mr. Kobori

Enjoyed Shinshu Soba (buck wheat noodles) with Mr. Kobori and Jon. Note the tempura.
Please pray for retired businessman, Mr. Kobori, as he preaches regularly at Abundant Life Church and Azumino Family Chapel (churches that Jon shares in the leadership). Please pray that we would all be 'godly.'

“There are three basic roles or functions that a Christian minister has: preaching, pastoring / counseling and leading. No one is gifted or equally gifted in all three areas and yet we must do them all... [but] The greatest factor for long-term effectiveness of a Christian minister is… godliness.... You may not have a strong public speaking gift; but if you are very godly, your wisdom, love and courage will mean that you will be interesting.... You may not have strong pastoral or counseling gifts (e.g. you may be very shy or introverted, etc.); but if you are very godly, your wisdom, love and courage will mean that you will comfort and guide people.... You may not have very strong leadership gifts (e.g. you may be disorganized or very cautious by nature); but if you are very godly, your wisdom, love and courage will mean that people will respect and follow you.

Tim Keller

"Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment.... But as for you, O man of God, flee these things (including "the love of money," context). Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.... He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen." portions of 1Timothy 6

I cannot do this alone.

O God, early in the morning I cry to you.

Help me to pray

And to concentrate my thoughts on you:

I cannot do this alone.

In me there is darkness, But with you there is light;

I am lonely, but you do not leave me;

I am feeble in heart, but with you there is help;

I am restless, but with you there is peace.

In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience;

I do not understand your ways,
 But you know the way for me…

Restore me to liberty,

And enable me to live now

That I may answer before you and before me.

Lord, whatever this day may bring,

Your name be praised.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Lord Jesus Christ, pierce my soul with your love....

Jesus Christ, pierce my soul with your love
so that I may always long for You alone,
who are the bread of angels
and the fulfilment of the soul’s deepest desires.
May my heart always hunger and feed upon You,
so that my soul may be filled with the sweetness of Your presence.
May my soul thirst for You,
who are the source of life, wisdom, knowledge, light and all the riches of God our Father.
May I always seek and find You,
think upon You, speak to You,
and do all things for the honour and glory of Your holy name.
Be always my only hope, my peace,
my refuge and my help in whom my soul is rooted
so that I may never be separated from You.

Bonaventure

"I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39
